The Significance of Command Words in Exams

Why should we pay attention to command words in exam questions? The answer is simple: they're incredibly important.

It's a common scenario: a student possesses in-depth knowledge of their subject but ends up with disappointing exam scores. The reason? They didn't tailor their answers to the specific command word in the question, leading to a disconnect between their knowledge and the examiners' expectations. This can be disheartening, to say the least.

Teachers understand this frustration all too well. Mastering exam techniques is an essential skill, distinct from subject knowledge. Even students with a strong grasp of the material can find themselves at a disadvantage if they haven't honed their exam strategies. The difference between mastering or neglecting these techniques can significantly impact grades, sometimes distinguishing a grade 9 from a grade 7, or a grade 7 from a grade 5.

However, there's a silver lining. Focusing on exam techniques, particularly understanding and applying command words, can dramatically improve a student's chances of excelling in GCSE or IGCSE Physics exams. Moreover, this skill isn't just for now; it lays a foundation that will benefit them in A-levels or college.

But what exactly are command words? They're specific terms in exam questions that instruct students on how to approach their answers. Derived from Ofqual's standardised list, these words are crucial for framing responses correctly. Exam boards might add their own, but the essence remains the same.

A common point of confusion lies between "describe" and "explain." To "describe" means to give a detailed account without needing to justify or reason. For instance, "DESCRIBE how force affects an object's extension" requires a straightforward depiction, not an explanation. On the other hand, "explain" demands an understanding of cause and effect, often requiring the word "because" in the response, like in "EXPLAIN the behaviour of an elastic spring under force."

A good starting point for students is to download the list of command words from their exam board's website. This small step can make a significant difference in their exam preparation.

Parents, if you or your child need additional guidance on exam techniques, you're not alone. It's a crucial area that, once mastered, can open doors to academic success.
